Italian racer Antonio Giovinazzi is a driver in the 2015 DTM Championship, who replaced Timo Scheider at the Moscow meeting in August.[1] Giovinazzi got the nod after Scheider was banned after an incident at the Red Bull Ring, having been the leader of the FIA European Formula 3 Championship in 2015.

Current SeasonEdit

Giovinazzi was drafted into Team Phoenix and Audi for the Moscow round, with the general consensus being that he would remain in Formula 3 until the end of the season. The Italian had a quiet debut race, finishing in nineteenth at a circuit he had only visited once before.[2]

BackgroundEdit

Giovinazzi started his racing career after seven years of karting, joining Formula Pilota China in 2012.[3] Six wins and a series of strong performances gave him a début title, with the Italian promoted to the FIA European Formula 3 Championship in 2013.[3] He also competed in the British Formula 3 Championship that season, taking a maiden win at Silverstone, as he finished as runner up in Britain.[3]

A switch of teams and priorities in 2014 saw Giovinazzi become a title contender in the European F3 Championship, as he claimed two wins on his way to sixth.[3] 2015 started brightly too, with the Italian leading the Championship at the halfway mark, before getting the call to driver for Team Phoenix in Moscow.[1] He was to continue in Formula 3 until the end of the season, with a potential DTM future in sight.

DTM HistoryEdit

Giovinizzi's DTM chance came after the events of the Red Bull Ring 2015 meeting, where Timo Scheider received a ban for 'Gamesmanship', having hit Robert Wickens into Pascal Wehrlein on the orders of Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich.[4] Team Phoenix invited him to take their second car for the Moscow race weekend (with Scheider set to return for the Oschersleben round), with the Italian racer adopting the #93 as his race number.[2]

His début weekend started with nineteenth in the shorter 40 minute race on Saturday, with the Italian completing a trouble free race.[2]
