Maximilian Götz (born 4 February 1986 in Ochsenfurt, Bavaria, West Germany) is a German racing driver, who competes in the 2021 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship with Mercedes-AMG Team HRT.[1] A factory driver for Mercedes, Götz would make his return to the DTM in 2021, having previously raced in the Series for the Stuttgart based marque between 2015 and 2016.[2]

Götz made his DTM debut in 2015 at the behest of Mercedes, who placed him in their customer Mücke Motorsport outfit for the campaign.[3] However, a difficult rookie season for the German racer would result, with Götz having to wait until the second half of the season to claim points.[4]

For 2016 Götz was placed in the second of the factory HWA Team entries by Mercedes, partnering Paul di Resta.[2] The German racer would again struggle to threaten the points too often, although he would secure a best career finish of fourth at the 2016 Moscow Raceway Race 1.[2]

After that Götz was dropped from Mercedes' DTM roster of drivers, who instead placed him in their various factory supported GT programmes.[5] However, after the DTM's switch to running GT3 based regulations for 2021, Götz would earn a recall to the German series, with Mercedes placing him in the factory blessed Haupt Racing Team entry.[1]

Background[]

Götz found his driving feet in karting, competing from the age of 10 in 1996.[6] Five years later and Götz was promoted to the Formula BMW ADAC Championship for 2002, ending the season in second and claiming the honour of being top rookie.[6] His 2003 title win in Formula BMW earned him the recognition as the ADAC Junior Driver of the Year, with a promotion to the Formula 3 Euro Series in 2004.[6]

Two seasons in Formula 3 saw Götz slowly obtain a reputation as a consistent finisher, although he missed a large section of the 2005 season, finishing a promising season with 13 points.[5] After testing and developing the Ferrari FXX road car through 2006, Götz returned to the Formula 3 Series, although he also took part in the International Formula Master Championship early on in the year.[5] A final season in Formula 3 followed in 2008, although he only managed a single points finish.[5]

To Touring[]

The Trofeo Lamborghini Championship tempted Götz in 2009, as he ended the season in seventh overall.[6] Yet, it was in the ADAC GT Masters where Götz finally proved his capabilities, spending five seasons in the championship.[6] His time in the championship peaked in 2012, when Götz took the title, and was rewarded with a Blancpain Endurance Series drive in 2013.[6]

2nd place in his Blancpain debut prompted Götz to go for the championship in 2014, a feat he achieved in the Sprint Series of the championship.[6] It was because of this campaign, which he completed in a Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3, that Mercedes-Benz opted to sign Götz to their DTM stable, sending him to Mücke Motorsport.[6]

DTM History[]

Götz was signed as a full DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship driver on 26 January 2015, joining Daniel Juncadella at Mücke Motorsport for the 2015 season.[2] Using a Mercedes C63 DTM, Götz took two sixteenth place finishes in the first duo of races at the DTM Festival that kicked off the season.[2]

GT3 Generation: 2021[]

The change to GT3 based regulations ahead of the 2021 season saw Götz get a second shot at the DTM, with Mercedes placing him in one of two entries run by the Haupt Racing Team in the Series.[1]
