Gary Paffett (born 24 March 1981 in Bromley, London, UK) is a British racing driver and double DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship Champion, having won the 2005 and 2018 editions of the Series.[1] A long standing factory driver for Mercedes, Paffett competed in the DTM between 2003 and 2018, before leaving the Series alongside the marque in 2018.[2]
Paffett moved into the DTM in 2003, after being signed by Mercedes and Team Rosberg to replace Patrick Huisman for the rest of the season.[3] Although the Brit would retire from his debut race at the Nürburgring, he would improve throughout the season, ending the season in eleventh in the Championship.[4]
Paffett was placed in the factory HWA Team for the 2004 season, and duly emerged as a title pretender, finishing as runner-up to Mattias Ekström after claiming four race victories.[5] In 2005 the Brit would again battle the Swede for the Championship, and duly defeated Ekström to secure the title with five victories.[6]
After missing the 2006 season due to testing commitments in Formula One, Paffett returned to the DTM in 2007, taking a seat at Persson Motorsport.[7] The Brit duly won on his second race after his return, although an otherwise disappointing season would see him slip to ninth in the Championship.[8]
Retained by Persson Motorsport for 2008, Paffett would have another comparatively poor campaign, remaining in ninth in the title hunt.[9] The Brit was then moved back to HWA Team for the 2009 season, with Paffett claiming four victories en-route to finishing as runner-up to Timo Scheider.[10]
Three more victories and another title challenge would follow for Paffett in 2010, although he would be defeated by stablemate Paul di Resta.[11] However, his form would desert him in 2011, with Paffett slipping back to seventh in the Championship with no wins.[12]
Armed with the new AMG-Mercedes C-Coupé for 2012, Paffett would would have another title bid, although this time he would fall short of Bruno Spengler's tally with two victories.[13] Another more disappointing season for Paffett would follow in 2013, with the Brit slipping to sixth with only one race victory.[14]
Yet, the 2014 season would be the most trying for Paffett, with the Brit slumping to 22nd in the Championship after struggling to lead the development of the latest version of the C-Coupé.[15] Regardless, the Brit was moved across to new-for-2015 entrants ART Grand Prix to lead their effort alongside Lucas Auer, and duly bounced back to ninth in the Championship.[16]
The 2016 season proved to be a similar story for Paffett, with the Brit slipping down to eleventh in the Championship with only two podium finishes.[17] The Brit was subsequently moved back to HWA Team for 2017 after ART withdrew, and would again have a quiet campaign, barring a heavy accident with Mike Rockenfeller at the Norisring.[18]
For 2018 Paffett would attempt to sign-off from the DTM in style, having accepted that it would be his last season as Mercedes would end their programme at the end of the season.[1] Indeed, a strong start would carry Paffett to his second Championship title, resisting a late challenge from René Rast to secure his second crown.[1]
Background[]
Paffett's career began with two seasons of karting in the mid-1990s, before he stepped into the Formula Vauxhall Junior Championship.[19] Taking that title on his second attempt, he took the full Vauxhall Championship in 1999, before taking the Scholarship Class in British Formula 3 in 2000.[19] He followed that victory with two seasons in the German Formula 3 Championship, taking the title on his second attempt.[19]
DTM History[]
Paffett was drafted into the Mercedes-Benz DTM programme after the start of the 2003, replacing Patrick Huisman at Team Rosberg at the Nürburgring.[20] It took until the second meeting at the Nürburgring that season for Paffett to score a point, ending the season with four points.[20] Three wins in the 2004 campaign, combined with a victory at the non-championship round in Shanghai, took Paffett to second in the championship.[20] His three wins came at Hockenheim, the Norisring and the Nürburgring.[20]
Master and McLaren[]
Victories at the Lausitzring, Oschersleben, Norisring, Zandvoort and Istanbul saw Paffett take the 2005 DTM Championship.[20] His greatest achievement earned him a test driver role at the McLaren Formula One team for 2006, with the Brit leaving the DTM to fulfil his F1 ambitions.[20] After a full years testing, however, restrictions in F1 meant that tests from 2007 onwards, would be increasingly limited, allowing Paffett to focus on the DTM (and F1 testing) once again in 2007.[20]
It took just two races for Paffett to rediscover his title winning pace, with victory at Oschersleben.[20] However, it was his only victory that year with Persson Motorsport and a year old Mercedes C-Class, which rather set the tone for 2008.[20] Without a win in 2008, Paffett was moved to the HWA team for 2009, taking on the role as Mercedes' lead driver.[20]
Mercedes' leading light[]
Paffett's 2009 campaign saw him fall just four points short of Timo Scheider's total, having won four races.[20] Victories at the Lausitzring, Zandvoort, Dijon and Hockenheim were followed by a similarly successful 2010 campaign.[20] Hockenheim, Zandvoort and Shanghai victories went to Paffett that season, before a barren 2011 season.[20]
Runner-up in 2012 saw Paffett take victories at Hockenheim and at his home race at Brands Hatch.[20] Yet, with Paffett unable to stand on the top step of the podium again that season saw him fall short of former teammate Bruno Spengler's championship winning total.[20] 2013 saw yet another victory for Paffett at the Lausitzring, although it was to be his last for at least two years.[20]
Paffett took over the development of the Mercedes-AMG C63 DTM during 2014, a fact that seriously harmed his points tally for the season.[20] His work paid off, however, with Paffett returning to the podium at the first round of the 2015 season.[20]
