Lucas Auer (born 11 September 1994 in Tyrol, Austria) is an Austrian racing driver, who competes in the 2020 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship on behalf of BMW Team RMR.[1] One of a number of drivers to have initially entered the DTM via the Formula 3 Euro Series, Auer rejoined the DTM in 2020, having previously raced for Mercedes until the end of 2018.[1]
Auer initially joined the DTM in 2015, after Mercedes signed him to join their roster of junior drivers in 2014.[2] Placed alongside Gary Paffett at the new ART Grand Prix squad, Auer would have a handful of points finishes, but would finish 23rd in the Championship.[3]
For 2016 Auer was transferred to Mücke Motorsport, partnering Christian Vietoris for the campaign.[4] The Austrian racer would claim his maiden DTM victory at the Lausitzring, with an additional podium finish leaving him in twelfth in the Championship.[5]
With Mücke Motorsport withdrawing a the end of 2016, Auer was incorporated into a third HWA Team entry alongside Edoardo Mortara for the 2017 season.[6] Again carrying sponsorship from BWT, Auer would start the season with two victories in three races, only to slip to sixth in the Championship.[7]
Remaining alongside Mortara at HWA for 2018, Auer was unable to add to his win tally, and hence dropped to seventh at the end of the season.[8] The Austrian racer subsequently lost his DTM seat when Mercedes left the Series at the end of 2018, resulting in the Austrian driver signing up to the Red Bull Junior Team and Super Formula for 2019.[9]
Background[]
After karting from the age of seven in 2001, Auer made his debut in racing cars in the JK Racing Asia Series, taking the championship at the first attempt in 2011.[10] Auer then opted to split his time between the German Formula 3 Championship and the Toyota Racing Series in 2012, finishing as runner-up in the former.[10] He remained as an entrant in the TRS in 2013, while, in Europe, he made the step up into the Formula 3 Euro Series.[10]
3rd in the TRS for 2013 was combined with 4th in the Euro Series, with his efforts also rewarded with a one-off appearance in the FIA World Endurance Championship.[10] Dropping his TRS commitments allowed Auer to focus on the WEC as well as the Euro Series in 2014, a move which proved profitable for his career.[10] 4th place once again earned Auer a chance in the DTM with ART Grand Prix.[10]
DTM History[]
Auer was announced as a DTM driver on the 29th of January 2015, with his race number selected as #22.[11] After retiring from the first race at the 2015 Hockenheim Opening Race 1 after contact with Martin Tomczyk, Auer failed to start the second race of the weekend. Auer ran wide at the Sachskurve on his reconnaissance lap, ending up in the barrier and out of the race.
