Maxime Martin (born 20 March 1986 in Uccle, Brussels, Belgium) is a Belgian racing driver, who competed in the DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship between 2014 and 2017.[1] A former factory driver for BMW Motorsport, Martin would race for the Bavarian manufacturer throughout his four seasons in the DTM, claiming three victories.[2]

Martin made his debut in 2014, joining the factory supported Team RMG effort, partnering Marco Wittmann.[3] A strong rookie season saw Martin claim his maiden DTM victory at the Moscow Raceway, en-route to seventh in the Championship.[4]

Retained by BMW and Team RMG for 2015, Martin would have a similar sophomore campaign, again partnering Wittmann.[5] Indeed, Martin would claim his second DTM victory at the 2015 Nürburgring Race 1 alongside two podium finishes, and would again finish in seventh in the Championship.[6]

For 2016 BMW would move Martin across to Team RBM, partnering a rookie in the form of Tom Blomqvist.[7] However, Martin would not reach the heights of his earlier two campaigns, failing to claim a victory, and hence slipped to eighth in the Championship.[8]

Bruno Spengler would join Martin at Team RBM for 2017, with the Belgian racer claiming his third victory at the 2017 Norisring Race 2.[2] However, while Martin would beat Spengler in the Championship, the Belgian racer would only secure eighth in the Championship.[9]

Martin left the BMW Motorsport factory squad, and the DTM, at the end of 2017, instead taking a factory seat with Aston Martin in the FIA World Endurance Championship.[10]

Background[]

Martin set out to compete in touring cars from the very start of his racing career, competing in the 2005 Mini Challenge World Final, taking victory.[10] After a fourth place in the Formula Renault 1.6 championship, Martin took third in the Eurocup Megane Trophy from 2007, taking the runner-up spot a season later.[10] A title in the French Renault Clio Cup in 2008 allowed Martin to move to Endurance racing from 2009, entering the FIA GT1 Championship.[10]

Enduring Career: 2009 - 2013[]

A third place at the 24 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps in 2009 kicked off his career, while in 2010 he took first at the 1,000km of Spa, while taking fourteenth in GT1.[10] Sixth place in GT1 followed in 2011, while he also made his Le Mans 24 Hours debut in LMP1 with Aston Martin.[10] He competed in GT1 for the final time in 2012, while also entering Le Mans twice more in 2012 and 2013.[10] After a 2013 campaign in the FIA GT Championship, during which Martin became a BMW factory driver, becoming part of their DTM campaign for 2014.[3]

DTM History[]

Martin's DTM career started without points until his third race, where a confident performance earned him sixth place.[11] Two races later, however, Martin achieved a stunning victory in Moscow, supporting team mate Marco Wittmann on his way to the title.[12] Two more points finishes were achieved before the end of the season, with Martin taking seventh in the Championship.[13]

Martin was retained for the 2015 Championship by BMW, remaining with the Team RMG squad.[5]
