The DTM Nürburgring meeting, otherwise known as the Nürburgring 2016 meeting, was the seventh round of the 2016 DTM Championship, staged on the 9th-11th of September 2016 on the National circuit at the Nürburgring.[1] The two races would see Marco Wittmann make a huge step towards the title, taking victory in one of the two races to extend his lead in the Championship.

BackgroundEdit

Marco Wittmann retained the lead of the DTM Championship with his victory in race two, while Robert Wickens was up in second having won race one. Leading the charge in third was Jamie Green, four points ahead of Edoardo Mortara in fourth, the last of those to have broken the 100 point barrier. Paul di Resta was in fifth, the first of those yet to hit triple figures, while a maiden point score for Felix Rosenqvist meant every regular driver in the series had scored in 2016.

Like their lead driver, both BMW and BMW Team RMG were still in command of their respective Championships, having grown both of their advantages in Moscow. Abt Sportsline held second as manufacturer Audi slipped to third behind Mercedes in the Brands Championship. Yet, despite their rise in the manufacturer bout, the best team based in Stuttgart would be their lead effort Team HWA I in fourth.

MilestonesEdit

StandingsEdit

Having taken a victory and a third place in the two races, Marco Wittmann left with a 33 point lead over second placed Edoardo Mortara, more than a win. Robert Wickens and Jamie Green still had realistic hopes of the title, although they were both over 50 points off the 2014 Champion in third and fourth. Paul di Resta sat in fifth, the latest driver to break 100 points, a mark that Tom Blomqvist was close to catching after another strong weekend.

BMW Team RMG continued to inch out their lead in the Teams' Championship, their advantage over Abt Sportsline now up to nine points. It was the former'a manufacturer BMW that also left the Nürburgring with the lead in the Brands' Championship, almost 70 points clear, as Audi climbed back into second. Mercedes were really struggling with the additional weight they had to carry through the weekend, their best team being Team HWA I having dropped to fifth in the Teams' Championship.
