Pascal Wehrlein (born 18 October 1994 in Sigmaringen, Baden-Württemberg, Germany) is a German-Mauritian racing driver, who won the 2015 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship and is therefore the youngest ever DTM Champion.[1] A Mercedes-Benz Junior Team member throughout his first stint in the DTM, Wehrlein would compete in the DTM between 2013 and 2015, before returning to the series in 2018.[2]

Wehrlein first joined the DTM in 2013, with Mercedes placing him at Mücke Motorsport alongside Daniel Juncadella for his rookie season.[3] The German youth would go on to have a quiet debut season, claiming three points en-route to 22nd in the Championship.[4]

Mercedes moved Wehrlein into a factory supported HWA Team car for the 2014 season, with the German racer running on his own.[5] The German racer duly showed improvements compared to the previous season, with Wehrlein claiming his maiden victory at the 2014 Lausitzring Race as he climbed to eighth in the Championship.[6]

For 2015 Wehrlein would be partnered by Christian Vietoris, and would duly outclass his new teammate from the start of the season.[1] Indeed, an excellent third campaign for Wehrlein would see the German youth claim the Championship a day before his 21st birthday, claiming two wins.[7]

As a result of his title victory Mercedes would aid Wehrlein in securing a seat in Formula One, with the German youth joining Manor Racing in February 2016.[8] He subsequently moved to Sauber F1 in 2017, although he would be dropped from the Swiss outfit, as well as F1, at the end of his sophomore season.[2]

As a result, Wehrlein would return to the DTM for 2018, rejoining HWA and Mercedes for a final campaign.[2] However, he would be unable to rediscover his title winning form, and hence ended the season in eighth prior to parting ways with Mercedes at the end of the year.[9]

After leaving the DTM Wehrlein would secure a seat at Mahindra Racing in the FIA Formula E Championship, although contract wrangles with Mercedes would delay his debut.[10]

Background[]

Wehrlein first took to the track, like most, at the wheel of a go-kart, before he was offered a chance in the ADAC Formula Masters Championship in 2010.[11] Sixth overall in his rookie year was transformed to an outright victory in 2011, before he graduated to Formula 3 in 2012.[11] A single campaign in the Formula 3 Euro Series which ended with Wehrlein in second saw Mercedes induct him into their DTM and Formula One programmes.[11]

DTM History[]

Placed with Mücke Motorsport for his debut season, Wehrlein took three points through the 2013 season.[12] A move to the HWA Team followed for 2014, where a quiet start to the season saw Wehrlein take fifth place at the Norisring, his best finish.[12] That result was, however, shattered when Wehrlein took victory at the Lausitzring, becoming one of the youngest ever winners in the DTM.[12]

Records among Records[]

Having become the youngest ever winner of a DTM race in 2014, Wehrlein was retained by Mercedes for 2015, while also being drafted into their Grand Prix programme in Formula One. After a podium in the first race of the season, Wehrlein had to be content with minor points scores in the next few rounds.[13] His second career victory came at the Norisring, a Mercedes stronghold, and launched Wehrlein into the title hunt.[14]

The turning point in the season came at the half way stage, when Timo Scheider knocked both Wehrlein and team mate Robert Wickens out of the second race at the Red Bull Ring.[15] That proved to be Wehrlein's only retirement all season, as he won the following race in Moscow and began a run of six consecutive points finishes that took him to a 37 point lead with two races to go.[16]

On the eve of his 21st birthday, Wehrlein would have to hope that his poor qualifying for the first race of the 2015 Season Finale would be mitigated by a non-podium finish for Mattias Ekström and Edoardo Mortara.[17] Having just missed an accident involving Adrien Tambay at the start, Wehrlein made a climb through the field to take eighth, which meant he won the title after finishing ahead of both of his rivals.[17] That result made him the youngest ever DTM Champion, in a season with a record twelve different winners.
